Greensboro EATS

A disproportionate number of challenges face Greensboro families when they are trying to feed their children. Greensboro is a hotspot of “food deserts” and food insecurity, with a large number of residents dealing with financial challenges exacerbated by rising grocery costs. To address this community need, the Junior League of Greensboro (JLG) is launching Greensboro EATS, which is an initiative to help families who are dealing with mounting food insecurity.
- “E”mpowering Children & Families. To empower children and families, we’re facilitating cooking demos through our Kids in the Kitchen healthy eating program. We also created a kid-friendly recipe resource guide, available both in print and digitally for community distribution. Our goal remains to help families facing food insecurity make nutritious, budget-friendly choices and build lasting healthy habits.
- “A”lleviating Food Insecurity. We’re hosting food drives and fundraisers, including the signature Plates with Purpose event on April 14, 2026 at the Cadillac Service Garage in Greensboro. We want to directly support children and families with tangible access to nutritious food while working on long-term solutions to food insecurity in Guilford County.
- “T”eaming Up with Community Partners. We’re teaming up with like-minded community partners such as A Simple Gesture, Backpack Beginnings, and Community Housing Solutions. Collaborating with these community organizations and leveraging the expertise of our trained JLG volunteers allows us to amplify our impact in the fight against hunger.
- “S”preading Awareness. Building on the success of our 2024–2025 speaker series, Narrowing the Hunger Gap, which was free and open to the public, we are expanding our outreach in 2025–2026 through community events at BackPack Beginnings Family Market, The Miriam P. Brenner Children’s Museum, and in continued partnership with the Boys & Girls Club – broadening awareness and inspiring action around food insecurity.
The mission of Greensboro EATS is to combat food insecurity and childhood hunger and to assist those living in food deserts. We know that we will not be able to solve this epidemic, but we can be part of the solution by harnessing the passion and power of our over 600+ members. Through building awareness, advancing education, and improving access to resources, and in partnership with local community organizations, the JLG will work tirelessly to help those in need in our community.
Recipe Resource Guide
As part of our Greensboro EATS initiative, the Junior League of Greensboro created a Recipe Resource Guide in 2025. The Guide is distributed for free through food pantries to consumers facing food insecurity. Featuring over 50 affordable, nutritious, delicious recipes and much more, the Guide is intended to inspire its readers to creatively use the staple ingredients and non-perishable goods they might receive from a food pantry. We’ve also added helpful tips to stretch your budget, reduce food waste, and even grow your own food!
